The Virtual Modalitory - March 9 + April 7

Rae Ringel of Georgetown University’s leadership coaching program and I are teaming up again to bring you a brand new online facilitation workshop. We’re leaving theories, frameworks, and philosophies at the door. This is a hardcore, nuts and bolts, activities-based workshop that’s designed to give you tool after tool you can use right away with your participants online. We’re calling it The Virtual Modalitory.

The virtual what?!

I’m glad you asked. A modality is a facilitation activity. It’s a method for energizing participants, bringing in ideas, or making decisions. The Marshmallow Challenge is a modality. A fishbowl discussion is a modality. Anything that participants do that takes up space on an agenda is a modality.

A modalitory (ok, we made that word up) is a modality laboratory. It’s a space for us to learn and practice using modalities.

You’ll learn and practice virtual modalities to connect and energize participants, bring out and capture ideas, decide from among those ideas, plan the way ahead, and reflect on how to apply and customize what you’ve learned to your own work.

So, what will we be learning?

You’re just full of questions, aren’t you? Over several months, we took our favorite in-person activities and redesigned them to be facilitated virtually. We tested them, tried them (with paying clients), and refined them to get them be as streamlined and frictionless as possible for online participants.

We’ll practice:

  • Icebreakers and energizers

  • Open Space

  • World Café

  • Pecha kucha

  • Adaptive case studies

  • Asset mapping / brainwriting

What ELSE will we be learning?

Seriously? That’s not enough? OK, fine. We will maximize what you can do with Zoom, PowerPoint, MURAL and other easy-to-use tools to build engagement and boost participation. We’ll also:

  • share techniques to moderate panels and multiple speakers online,

  • effectively manage audience question and answer sessions,

  • facilitate roundtable meetings that culminate in decisions,

  • set goals and plan actions, and

  • facilitate learning and listening sessions that allow participants to hear from diverse stakeholders.

Should I attend?

I dunno, should you? This will be one modality and activity after another. This is all about you adding ready-to-use tools and techniques to your toolbox of online facilitation methods. This is for the working facilitator who wants to learn methods applicable to the next session. Does that describe you?

When is it?

That’s it, that’s your last question. We have two scheduled: Tuesday, March 9 from 12PM - 4PM EST, and Wednesday, April 7 from 12PM - 4PM EST.
